Forest Elder | 12.30.2024
Grafton Lakes State Park

Large trees are time capsules, encapsulating decades, and at times, centuries of intertwined human and ecological narratives within their rings. Silently chronicling the ebb and flow of environmental shifts, they bear witness to escalating human influence through the march of industry and the rise of automobiles. They carry the echoes of natural calamities, even those occurring many miles away, such as the fallout of ash from a distant volcano eruption. As they bridge the distance from the Earth to the sun, they become custodians of a profound history. I never pass up the opportunity to photograph one.

Bennington Battle Monument Sunrise | 12.16.2023

Bennington Battle Monument Sunrise | 12.16.2023

A fiery morning sky over the Bennington Battle Monument in Bennington, Vermont.

The monument stands at 306 feet tall and is made of blue-gray dolomite marble quarried locally. The cornerstone was laid on August 16, 1887, marking the 110th anniversary of the battle of Bennington. The monument's design draws inspiration from classical architecture, with a distinctive Victorian aesthetic. It was completed in 1889 and officially dedicated on August 19, 1891.

The Battle of Bennington took place on August 16, 1777, during the American Revolutionary War. It was a significant engagement between American forces, primarily composed of New Hampshire and Vermont militia, and British and German (Hessian) troops under General John Burgoyne.

The Battle of Bennington is often considered a turning point in the war. American forces, led by General John Stark, decisively defeated the British and Hessian troops commanded by Colonel Friedrich Baum. The American victory at Bennington boosted morale, attracted more recruits to the Continental Army, and hindered Burgoyne's advance. It played a role in the larger campaign leading to Burgoyne's eventual surrender at Saratoga in October 1777.

Electric Stars | 11.27.2023

Electric Stars | 11.27.2023

November's full Beaver moon shot through strings of holiday lights.

The Beaver Moon is one of the traditional names for the full moon that occurs in November. These names for full moons often have roots in Native American, Colonial American, or other traditional North American naming systems tied to the seasons, nature, or cultural events.

The name "Beaver Moon" is thought to have originated from the Algonquin people. November was the time of year when beavers built their winter dams, and the Beaver Moon marked the time to set beaver traps before the swamps froze, ensuring a supply of warm winter furs.

Faint aurora last light at the Tomhannock Reservoir. I’m sure the halos of Saratoga and Glens Falls are influencing the glow, but it was there. Not visible to the naked eye, but possible to detect at longer exposures.

Harvest Super Moon | 09.28.2023

Harvest Super Moon | 09.29.2023
Saratoga County, New York

The term "Harvest Moon" refers to the full moon that occurs nearest to the autumnal equinox, which usually falls in September or early October. This moonrise is unique because, during this time of the year, the moonrise happens shortly after sunset for several days in a row. This rapid succession of moonrises gave farmers extra light in the evenings, allowing them to continue harvesting their crops even after the sun had set. Hence, it was called the Harvest Moon because it provided additional light for farmers working late into the night to harvest their crops before winter.
